Such a simple question may have a simple solution, or it may not. Itchy feet could be a sign of something as small as just needing to apply moisturizer, or it could be a sign of a fungal infection. Individuals with itchy feet should pay attention to key factors to help determine if it is time to see a doctor. If you are suffering from itchy feet, then read more below.
Do you notice that your feet are more itchy before showering?
Pay attention to when the feet are bothering you. Do they become itchy after showering or before showering? If your feet are itchy before showering and the symptoms are relieved by showering, something that your feet are coming in contact with could be contributing to the itchy sensation. Did you recently start using a new laundry detergent or fabric softener? Many times people can have sensitivities to chemicals in a new detergent or fabric softener that they are using on their socks.
Are your feet itchy after showering and not before?
Hot showers, especially in the winter months, can lead to dry skin. This is only worsened by the use of harsh soaps which disrupt the normal oils on the skin. Should you notice that your feet become more itchy after a shower, then try lowering the temperature when showering and using a moisturizer .
Is it seasonal?
The arid winter environment can contribute to a known condition called xerosis, or dry skin. Try applying a topical cream daily to help manage the moisture loss. Some creams on the market, like Sorevna, have been specifically designed for feet and hands to address xerosis.
Is it always present and/or worsening?
If the condition has been present for several weeks, and/or is worsening, it may be time to seek medical attention. Individuals who frequent gyms and nail salons are at a higher risk of contracting a fungal infection. There are key elements that present on the feet that suggest that you may have a fungal infection, such as annular scaling. It is important to have the area assessed by a trained professional to rule out a fungal infection or other conditions such as an autoimmune disease.
