Gout Treatment Q & A

What is gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis that can develop when you have high levels of uric acid. Normally, your body produces and disposes of uric acid on its own.

Gout occurs when your body either produces too much uric acid or excretes too little. High levels of uric acid cause sharp urate crystals to form around your joints, resulting in intense joint pain, inflammation, and redness.

As the condition continues, it may become difficult to move the affected joint. Gout typically affects the joint of your big toe, but can also affect joints in your ankles and knees. After the initial gout attack, joint discomfort can linger from a few days to a few weeks.

What are the risks of developing gout?

There are several factors that can contribute to high levels of uric acid including:

  • High sugar diets

  • Diets rich in meat and seafood

  • Obesity

  • High blood pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Kidney disease

  • Family history

For some people, alcohol consumption can increase the risk of a gout attack. Certain medications can also contribute to high levels of uric acid.

Gout tends to affect men more than women. Men are more likely to develop gout between the ages of 30 and 50 while women don’t typically develop the condition until after menopause.

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

  • Limiting alcohol consumption

  • Staying hydrated

  • Limiting fish and meat in your diet
