EPAT Q & A

What is EPAT?

Extracorporeal pulse activation technology (EPAT) is an FDA-cleared noninvasive outpatient treatment for foot and ankle pain. During EPAT treatment, a series of acoustic pressure waves trigger your body to begin its injury reaction processes.

Injury reaction includes activating metabolism, increasing blood circulation, and speeding up the normal healing process. This scientifically proven treatment starts the tissue regeneration process inside your body without any incisions, injections, anesthesia, or downtime.

EPAT can be an integral part of a recovery plan if you want fast and effective pain relief. This unique treatment even helps many patients avoid surgery. With a patient satisfaction rate of 80%, EPAT is now a leading treatment for several common types of foot pain.

What types of foot pain does EPAT treat?

EPAT treats musculoskeletal pain affecting the feet and ankles, such as:

  • Heel pain

  • Sprains

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Achilles tendinitis

  • Morton’s neuroma

  • Trigger point pain

If you have acute or chronic foot or ankle pain, talk to Dr. Wright about whether EPAT could fit into your treatment program to accelerate your recovery.

What is the EPAT therapy process like?

For this treatment, Dr. Wright applies a special ultrasound gel lightly over the area where you have pain. This gel helps you absorb the full power of the pressure waves directly at the site of the pain.

Dr. Wright moves the handheld treatment device in a circular motion to deliver the pressure waves. Within 10 minutes, you’re done and on your way home.

How do I prepare for EPAT?

Dr. Wright generally advises patients to avoid taking any anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen in the weeks before and after a scheduled EPAT session.

Avoiding anti-inflammatory drugs is important because your EPAT treatment generates inflammation in your tissues. This is what stimulates your injury response, so it’s important not to take drugs that combat that.

How often do I need EPAT therapy?

Most patients have weekly EPAT sessions for 3-5 weeks. Each session takes only 5-10 minutes, and there’s absolutely no downtime needed. You can walk immediately and return to full normal activities within just 24-48 hours.

Some patients feel better right away after EPAT, but it can take up to a month to experience pain relief.
