Shin Splints Treatment Q & A

What are shin splints?

Shin splints refers to tenderness, swelling, and pain along the inner edge of the shin bone (tibia) in your lower leg. The pain of shin splints results from inflammation in the tendons and muscles that attach to your shin bone.

This type of pain is often a side effect of repetitive physical activity like running or sports. If you’re a dancer or runner, you’re at high risk for shin splints. You may also be prone to persistent shin pain if you have very high arches or flat feet.

When should I seek treatment for shin splints?

If you have sharp or throbbing shin pain that doesn’t get better with rest or over-the-counter medications, Dr. Wright recommends that you schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Quantum Foot and Ankle Group, PC.

During your evaluation, he physically examines your leg to locate areas of swelling and tenderness. Dr. Wright also discusses your exercise routine to identify factors that contribute to your pain.

You may need diagnostic imaging tests, like Verity CT scans or X-rays, to assess inflammation in the soft tissues near your shin bone. Dr. Wright may also request these tests to ensure you don’t have stress fractures in your shin bone.

What are some shin splints treatments?

To relieve the discomfort of shin splints, Dr. Wright customizes a shin splint treatment plan based on your pain’s frequency and severity.

You may benefit from pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medications. Dr. Wright might also suggest ice therapy several times a day to treat swelling near your shin bone. Rest is important for easing shin splint pain and you may need to limit physical activity when you’re feeling shin discomfort or pain.

Dr. Wright works with you on a prevention plan to reduce the frequency of shin splints. He can prescribe custom orthotics that you insert into your shoe to provide more cushioning support for your feet and legs while you exercise. He may recommend changes to your physical activity to protect your muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
