Laser Therapy

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Laser Therapy

What is a Laser?

A laser is essentially an amplification of light.  Over the years, we have modified lasers in medicine to treat
different things.  Depending on the type of laser, they can be used to treat warts and other skin disorders or internal pathology
such as ankle sprains, muscle strains, arthritis and even neuropathy.

Does it Hurt?

At Quantum, we use a Class IV laser.  There is no pain and no heat generated from the use of the laser.  Patients sometimes note
a dull ache the following day after a laser treatment many times described as feeling like they "did a workout at the gym".  The procedure

itself is painless, but some mild soreness may be expected the day after treatment.

Is this the same as Cold Laser?

No, cold lasers are usually used by physical therapy practices for certain forms of rehabilitation.  A cold laser is a Class III laser designed for
superficial penetration.  Class 3 lasers do not have the power to penetrate deeply into tissues.  A Class IV laser has restricted use to specialists in the medical community or hospitals.  Class 4 lasers require precautions during use as they modulate cellular behavior to promote different types of tissue restoration.

What conditions are treated with a Class IV laser?

Class IV lasers have been used to treat:

  • Arthritic Pain

  • Neuropathic Pain

  • Sprains

  • Strains

  • Skin Ulcerations

  • Bursitis

  • Tendonitis

  • Plantar Fasciitis

Is everyone a candidate for laser therapy?

Not everyone is a candidate for laser therapy.  A consultation is required to determine if laser therapy is right for you.

How many treatments does it take and how long are the treatments?

The typical laser therapy session is 8-15 minutes depending on the extent of pathology.  For conditions that are acute (recent injuries) six

sessions are required per the current clinical standard.  For those individuals that have had a chronic condition (ongoing injuries) twelve sessions are required.
