Plantar Fasciitis Treatment Q & A

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation in the bands of tissues in the arch of your foot. Your plantar fascia is a long ligament that connects the heel to the front of your foot. This ligament also provides support for your foot arch and absorbs the shocks of your foot’s movement.

Inflammation occurs from strains on the plantar fascia from your movements or if too much pressure tears the ligament. Damaging pressure can be the result of:

  • Obesity
  • Very high foot arches
  • Repetitive stress from sports or running
  • Overly tight calf muscles

You may also be at increased risk for plantar fasciitis pain after increasing your amount of physical activity.

What are the symptoms of plantar fasciitis?

A hallmark symptom of plantar fasciitis is pain near the heel at the bottom of your foot. This pain may be worse in the morning or after an extended period of rest.

Because other conditions can cause heel pain, Dr. Wright recommends that you schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Quantum Foot and Ankle Group, PC to confirm or rule out plantar fasciitis.

He performs a physical exam of your foot and may order X-rays or other diagnostic imaging tests to get a better look at the inner structures of your foot.

Dr. Wright also offers Verity® CT scan technology to create high-resolution images of your foot so he can design the right treatment plan for you.

What are some plantar fasciitis treatments?

You can often find relief from plantar fasciitis related heel pain with nonsurgical treatments like physical therapy, ice therapy, and the use of over-the-counter medications.

However, if your plantar fasciitis pain continues, Dr. Wright offers extracorporeal shockwave therapy. This noninvasive plantar fasciitis treatment involves delivering shockwave energy into your foot to stimulate your body’s own immune system.

The treatment is highly effective at relieving inflammation and pain, and can reduce the need for surgery.

Dr. Wright may also recommend custom orthotics to provide additional cushioning for your heel and added support for your foot.
