Ankle Pain Treatment Q & A

What causes ankle pain?

There are many causes of ankle pain, with sprains being the most common. In an ankle sprain, one of your ankle ligaments stretches too much, often to the point of tearing.

Some other possible causes of ankle pain include:

  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Bursitis
  • Gout
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bone fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Osteochondral lesions of the talus

Some autoimmune diseases, including lupus, scleroderma, and rheumatoid arthritis, can also cause chronic ankle pain.

How is ankle pain diagnosed?

At Quantum Foot and Ankle Group, PC, Dr. Wright uses several methods to find the damage within your ankle and the reasons behind it. He performs a hands-on ankle and foot exam, which may include sensation tests.

Imaging is very important in ankle pain diagnostics because it reveals both the source of the pain and the extent of the damage.

Dr. Wright uses high-resolution X-rays, diagnostic ultrasound, and a state-of-the-art low-dose cone beam CT machine to find the problem efficiently and with minimal radiation exposure.

How is ankle pain treated?

Ankle pain treatment can vary according to how quickly you seek help. It’s easiest to treat pain effectively — and prevent injury worsening — if you see Dr. Wright as soon as your pain starts.

Conservative care

Often, early stage ankle pain responds well to conservative care, including rest, ice packs, and immobilization like a brace or bandage. Physical therapy is often part of conservative care, as it helps you develop stronger ankles without invasive treatments.

Extracorporeal pulse activation technology (EPAT®)

EPAT treatment is a noninvasive, no-anesthesia solution for many kinds of acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain. In this treatment, a series of acoustic pressure waves induce a healing response in your ankle. This includes improved circulation and new blood vessels to encourage tissue regeneration.

Stem cell-derived therapy

In stem cell-derived therapy, Dr. Wright injects sterilized and screened amniotic fluid products directly into the area of ankle pain. Amniotic fluids are rich in stem cells that can create new tissue of any type.

Custom orthotics

Dr. Wright may also recommend custom orthotics, which help support and guide your ankle as you heal. If you have foot or ankle movement problems, such as inward-rolling ankles, long-term orthotic use can help you avoid future injury and pain.
